Why Strength Training Isn't Just for Midlife... It's for Life

If you're in your 40s or 50s and starting to experience the symptoms of perimenopause, you've probably heard the same advice over and over:

"You need to start strength training."

And it's true.

Strength training is one of the most effective things you can do to support your body through perimenopause and beyond. It helps maintain muscle mass, supports bone density, improves balance, boosts metabolism and can even have a positive impact on mood and confidence.

But here's the thing...

Strength training isn't just important when you reach midlife. It's important throughout your entire life.

We Grew Up in a Different World

Many women going through perimenopause today grew up in the 80s and 90s.

Back then, the weights area in the gym was rarely filled with women.

It was seen as the place for bodybuilders and men trying to get bigger.

Women were encouraged to stick to the treadmill, the exercise bike or the aerobics class.

We were told that being skinny was beautiful.

We were told that muscles weren't feminine.

We worried about putting on muscle far more than we worried about losing it.

If we carried a little extra body fat, we felt guilty.

If we had strong shoulders or muscular legs, many of us tried to hide them.

Without realising it, we were taught that our bodies existed to be looked at rather than appreciated for what they could do.

Looking back now, that's quite a sad message.

Your Body Is More Than Its Reflection

One of the biggest mindset shifts I see in our members is when they stop looking at their bodies purely as something to criticise.

Instead, they begin asking different questions.

Can I carry my shopping without struggling?

Can I get up from the floor easily?

Can I lift my grandchildren?

Can I climb a hill on holiday without stopping every few minutes?

Can I feel energetic enough to enjoy life?

These things matter so much more than whether your stomach is completely flat.

I've always loved the idea of looking at your body for what it can do, not just what it looks like.

Strength changes the relationship you have with yourself.

Instead of constantly focusing on flaws, you start noticing achievements.

The first push-up.

The first pull-up.

Lifting a heavier kettlebell.

Completing a full workout without stopping.

They're victories that no number on the scales can measure.

Let's Be Honest...

Having said all that...

I still enjoy looking good.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to feel confident in your clothes or liking what you see in the mirror.

A little bit of vanity isn't something to apologise for.

The difference is that it no longer drives everything I do.

These days, I'm far more interested in the numbers on the barbell than the numbers on the bathroom scales.

Because every extra kilogram I lift represents something much bigger.

It means I'm getting stronger.

It means my bones are being challenged.

It means my body is becoming more resilient for the future.

Ironically, when you focus on becoming stronger instead of simply becoming smaller, your body often changes anyway.

It's Never Too Late to Start

One of the biggest misconceptions is that if you didn't strength train in your twenties or thirties, you've somehow missed your chance.

You haven't.

Your body is incredibly adaptable.

Whether you're 35, 45, 55 or 70, you can become stronger than you are today.

Every session builds confidence.

Every session builds resilience.

Every session is an investment in your future self.

The best time to start strength training may have been years ago.

The second best time is today.
